Who can ever forget that iconic moment in “real potomac housewives” when Karen Huger called Ashley Darby’s bunions?
Yes, she came for her buns – she came for them tightly.
But while they can often be a butt of friendly jokes, bunions are not really funny issues, according to a New York City Podiatric.
Dr. Brad Schaeffer, tlcâ star “my feet are killing me,“It notes that bunions are not just a cosmetic issue – and they go deeper than you think.
“There is a common common concept that bunions are simple calls or bone overload on the side of the toe, but they are actually complex deformities derived from an unstable foot joint that allows the thumb to get away from the stretch,” he told the post.
“The condition is progressive and as it worsens, it usually causes the toe to turn, creating a visible lump on the side of the foot.”
Here are some other Bunion myths that this podiatric wants to bet.
Bunions are a “old lady” problem
“There are many wrong myths and concepts about bunions and many of them discourage people to look for care for them,” Schaeffer said. “Many people believe that bunions are a problem that” old ladies “develop as a result of years of high heels and tight shoes.”
As it turns out, “Bunions are very common – almost 25% of adults in the US only develop the condition,” he said.
And while he admits that they are “most often seen in older women”, he also treats men and even teenagers with bunions.
Bunions are caused by high heels
“There are myths that high heels cause bunions,” he said. “While they can aggravate the problem by squeezing their fingers together and pressuring the large fingertips, they are not the main cause of the condition.”
The true culprit? Genetics.
“The situation often goes to the family, which makes genetics one of the leading causes of the bunions,” he said. “Poor mechanical structure – such as foot shape and structure – can result in such defects, and this is a feature that often goes to the family.”
Bunions are caused by unpleasant shoes
If you have bunions, your mother will be more likely to blame than your manolos. And wearing sneakers all day will not save you.
“I see patients of all ages, sexes and all the spheres of life that develop bunions, despite their choice of shoes,” he said.
Bunions are not great work
They may not be dangerous to life, but “they are left without supervision-they can become much more than a foot.
“Bunions are a progressive deformity and while they can start as a minor concern, they often cause severe pain and discomfort as they worsen,” he said.
“Many patients who once enjoyed very active lifestyle, eventually have problems simply walking and performing activities as their bunion progresses.”
Bunions occur only by the thumb
According to Schaeffer, “a bunion on the outside of the foot is called a Bunion Tailors or
Bunionette, “and it’s not as delightful as it sounds.
“I often see patients who have bunions on both sides of their leg because their leg overestimates in the inside – bunion” and outside “bunionette,” he said. “I’ve seen people with high arches have bunionettes like their only issue without a bunion, but I usually see them in Tandem.”
Bunions require a great surgery with tone of recovery time
There are non-surgical options-at least at first.
â € œPodiatrists often recommend that patients prove conservative options first, “he said.” These include buying wider shoes, filling or orthotics to accommodate deformation and reduce pain.â €
If this does not shorten it, the surgery may be another, but science has given us better options than what your grandmother had.
“In the past, podiatric surgeons used a procedure called 2D osteotomy, where they shave the elongated bone of the thumb and then cut and move the bone,” he said. “This escapes from cosmetic bumps, but it will not address the unstable node in the leg causing bunion.”
Now, he prefers to perform the correction of Lapiplasty 3D Bunion, a more modern surgical adjustment that addresses the root of the problem and restores patients back to their feet faster.
“This surgical approach allows the surgeon to turn the patient’s bone structure into his normal 3D extension,” he said.
This procedure also has a low repetition rate, with most patients holding their extent in 13- and 17-month clinical studies.
Buttom line? Schaeffer wants to “encourage people who do not fit this profile and may be embarrassed to seek care to make an appointment with their doctor and talk about their treatment options.”
