A content creator has revealed the warning signs of a narcissistic friend, claiming to be as “toxic” as meeting with a narcissist.
Tiktokker @beyondthebruise, who uses her experience with domestic violence to educate her followers online, claimed that narcissists are “much harder to see” in platonic relationships than in romantic ones.
“A friend who is a narcissist does not drain you alone, they use you,” she explained in a viral video that marked 967,000 views. “They do everything around them as they give you the absolute minimum naked in return.”
They often “love attention”, prevailing conversations and interrupting people to focus themselves.
When you keep a narcissist in your orbit, everything will feel “like a competition”.
“They can’t just be happy for you, they have to grow you,” she said. “If you get a promotion, they have already done better. If you had a harsh day, they would have a worse day”
She added: “In their minds, every moment is a chance to prove they are superior.”
A narcissistic friend will also often “disappear when you need more,” she continued.
“They like to be around you when you are fun, when you are successful, when you are helpful, but when you need actual support, they fantasize, rest, act as if you are a burden,” she said.
If they offer “support”, it is often “back”, which means that compliments “will feel insult in disguise”.
Finally, being friends with a narcissist will often let you feel “drained, not with energy, after spending time with them”.
“A good friendship leaves you to feel first, supported, appreciated, but a narcissistic friendship leaves you exhausted because you are constantly walking in eggs or trying to try your value,” she said.
“If you constantly feel used, fired, drained, this is not a friend.”
