Stretching signs are a form of toothache that occurs as your skin quickly extends or decreases beyond its normal capacity. This strain causes elastine and collagen on your skin to break down, and while healing, stretch signs may occur.

These so -called “lightning strokes” and “tiger lines” are more common than you might think. Evaluations suggest up to 90% of people have signs of stretch at some point in their lives, though they are generally more common in women than men.

Seed puts you at risk for stretching signs?

“There are many reasons why the stretch signs can happen,” said Dr. Maressa C. Criscito, a dermatological surgeon in NYU Langone Health. “It may be during pregnancy, it may be due to the fluctuation of weight or certain medicines. These are generally the most common causes.”

If you hit an increase in growth during adolescence or bulk through lifting weights, you can find yourself with stretch signs.

Criscito said that genetics plays a major role, as our genes affect both elasticity and our skin structure and regulate body weight. This means if people in your family have stretch signs, you are more likely to join the club.

“One of the many things that contributes to what we are, what we look like and how we feel,” Criscito said.

Conditions like Cushing’s syndrome can also increase the chances of developing stretching signs, as hormonal disorder can lead to rapid weight gain and skin thinning due to excess cortisol, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

People with Marfan Syndrome often develop signs of stretch, even without any weight fluctuation, because the connective tissue weakened on their skin makes it less resilient.

The worst part of the stretching signs

While stretching signs do not harm and are not dangerous, they can get a large number of mental health, especially when it comes to self -esteem, body image, depression and anxiety.

In one study, nearly one -third of women with stretch signs reported that they felt “too” or “moderate” discomfort for lesions. These women were also more likely to say that their stretch signs affected other parts of their lives, such as accompaniment and choices and clothing.

“Many women said that stretching signs caused similar or more exciting concerns than other skin problems, such as acne, eczema and psoriasis,” said Dr. Timothy Johnson, co -author of the study and a professor of obstetrics and gynecology in Michigan Medicine.

Can you prevent stretching signs?

Criscito said her patients often ask how to keep the stretch signs in the first place.

“There is nothing that we know will surely help prevent stretch signs,” she said. However, Criscito noted that keeping your body hydrated, staying hydrated and maintaining a healthy weight – especially during pregnancy – can reduce the risk.

“But after all, even with all those things, one can still develop signs of stretch,” she added.

How do you get rid of them?

While prevention can be difficult, minimizing their appearance is not even a walk in the park. Like any scar, stretch signs are usually permanent, but certain cosmetic treatments can help make them less visible.

“There are things like non-ablative fractional laser and radiofrequency microneedling that can help,” said Dr. Lisa O. Akintilo, Board certified dermatologist and dermatological surgeon at NYU Langone Health. “I also like lasers aimed at redness to close those blood vessels and make wounds less visible.”

If you want to spend a journey to the dermatologist, the akintilo recommends unaccounted products such as the body retinol and vitamin A cream, which can stimulate collagen production over time and can help minimize stretch signs.

“This is usually something I recommend for everyone,” Aqintilo said, though she stressed that pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid the use of topical vitamin A due to the potential risks to the fetus.

In general, Akintilo said she advises women who are planning to have more children to keep away in the treatment of their signs of stretch until their births of children are behind them.

“If we treat the skin and get it better and then you have another baby and get into the matter, You may have to repeat treatments that may not be cost effective, ”Akintilo said.
