The worst foods to buy in supermarket – and the healthiest options

If you are looking to embrace a healthier lifestyle this year, you can become more alert by reducing your intake of ultra -processed foods.

There is scientific evidence that diet rich in ultra-processed foods are linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, mental health disorders, diabetes, overweight, sleep problems and even premature death, Harvard Medical School reported.

Fox News Digital arrived at two food experts for useful ways to identify ultra-processed foods in your grocery store or your supermarket-and to make better, healthier choices.

What are ultra -processed foods?

Many ultra -processed foods favor convenience, as they are ready products to eat like deli meat, microwave or chips, as Harvard medical school has noticed.

“Processed ultra foods contain added fats, sugar and sodium, in addition to additives and stabilizers,” said Shannon O’mera, a dietitian registered with Orlando Health in Florida, said Fox News Digital.

“We want to avoid these foods due to higher amounts of salt, sugar and saturated fat because they can affect and contribute to various health conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.”

If you are not sure if something is an ultra -processed food, look at food and ingredients, O’meara advised.

If sodium, saturated fat and added sugar content are 5% or less on the food label, it means that the food item is low in those nutrients, she explained.

Beyond that, look at the ingredient label.

“If you are not sure of an ingredient or haven’t heard of seeing me or even having a hard time to pronounce it, it is more than possible an ultra processed food,” O’mera told Fox News Digital.

There are some keywords to help identify ultra -processed foods, Jerold Mande said.

Mande is CEO of Nourish Science, a Bethesda, Maryland -based nonprofit working to solve the country’s food crisis.

He is also a food assistant professor at the Harvard Th Chan Public Health School in Boston.

“For example,” he said about ultra-processed foods, “emulsifiers like soy, carrage and mono- and diglycerides keep the food ingredients from separation, but are likely to damage our microbe,” Mande said.

Ordinary ultra -processed foods

Here are some of the ultra -processed foods in a grocery store, Mande and O’mera told Fox News Digital.

1. Sweet soda

Soft sugar -loaded drinks should be overlooked, both experts said.

Sweet soda “are an ultra -processed food associated with overweight, diabetes and dental disease in children,” Mande said.

2. Processed meat

The convenience factor should not exceed the risks of health, experts warned.

“Processed meat, including Deli meat and chicken nugges, are ultra -processed cancer -related foods, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and dementia,” Mande told Fox News Digital.

3. Foods for the breakfast of children

Some morning products for children, including toast and sweeter cereals, are ultra -processed and overweight, diabetes and “mind health problems,” Mande said.

4. Food ready to do

These ultra -processed foods are associated with overweight and cardiovascular disease, Mande said.

5. Bread goods produced in trade

It can be a better choice to choose baked treatments and oven products rather than catch packaged items.

O’mera said that commercial prepared products in this food category are not the best option.

Best alternatives to ultra -processed foods

Here are some healthier choices O’mera suggested buying instead of grocery stores.

1. Protein foods

Choose meat, poultry, fish, seafood, beans, nuts and seeds.

2.

Buy pasta, rice, oats and grits.

3. The dairy

Choose unsaturated milk and yogurs.

4. Fruits

Buy fresh or frozen fruit.

5. Vegetables

Load your carriage with fresh or frozen tools, but skip the sauces or spices.
