The surprising way scientists say smokers can facilitate the attraction of nicotine

Has Nicotine’s addiction finally met her in her match?

Smoking is one of the most harmful habits to adopt because it can cause lung cancer, heart disease and some other health problems. However, over 22% of the world’s population uses tobacco, according to the World Health Organization, with more than 8 million people die of it every year.

Approximately half of adult smokers in the US try to abandon each year, but usually less than 10% actually succeed – mainly due to problems that administer intense desires and withdrawal symptoms.

The US Food and Drug Administration has approved two medicines created to help reduce tobacco desires – bupropion (traded as wellbutrin) and varenicline (Chantix).

Now, scientists in Korea have found that the drug process of Parkinson’s disease can relieve the physical symptoms of nicotine attraction, such as vibrations and decreased mobility.

“This study presents new opportunities for the treatment of tobacco cessation by mitigating the outages caused by the symptoms of withdrawal,” said Dr. My brain disorder center of the Institute of Science and Korean Technology. “It provides an additional treatment option along with bupropion and varenicline.”

Parkinson’s patients have an imbalance between neurotransmitters acetylcholine and dopamine within the stratum, a part of the brain deeply involved in movement control and processing rewards.

Dopamine disappearance is the leading cause of motor symptoms associated with Parkinson.

Procyclidine works to restore balance by blocking the activity of cholinergic interneurons, nerve cells that release acetylcholine. The drug treats muscle stiffness, vibrations and spasms in Parkinson’s patients.

My group found that giving a single low dose of procyclidine to mice that exhibit symptoms of nicotine attraction decrease their vibration by over 50%.

The idea is that nicotine is structural -like acetylcholine, allowing it to connect to receptors to cholinergic interneurons. Team experiments showed that interneuron printing reset the level of dopamine in the striatum.

Dopamine is known as the “feel good” hormone, and nicotine in the cigarettes stimulates its release. Quitters often experience desires because they lose dopamine hit. Restoring dopamine would facilitate withdrawal.

“By moving forward, we aim to deepen understanding of addiction mechanisms, including nicotine and develop effective therapy,” IM said.

The results of my study were published in November in the journal Advanced Science.

Since Procyclidine has already been approved in the US and other places, the next step is to make sure it does not interact with located tobacco treatments and see if the one-two fist can help people stop smoking for good.
