Error # 1: Avoiding the probe completely

The biggest mistake people can make is not to make colonoscopy at all, whether they think they don’t need it, because imagining a camera by placing their backs makes them feel comfortable .

“There is a fear, right? There is fear of an invasive procedure, ”said Dr. Rivadeneira, adding that some people become filthy because of the body part, thinking: “They are climbing me to the rectum and seeing with a camera.”

But it’s really the best thing you can do to catch it, so it’s important to reserve your own if you are at the right age.

Current guidelines advise patients to make their first colonoscopy at the age of 45 – unless they are at higher risk or have other predisposing factors, such as a family history of colon cancer or polyps. In that case, discuss how quickly you should go with your primary care doctor.

“People do not understand exactly how important this is. Family history is great, ”and especially you have many family members, then there can be a genetic cause,” said Dr. Rivadeneira.

Error #2: Trust of old stories about the cleaning process

The doctor admitted that many people are driven by preparation, which involves drinking a laxative formula to rinse the intestines – and means suffering from 12 to 16 hours of diarrhea.

“People are afraid of preparing more than anything. The process of cleaning, believe it or not, ”he said. “I personally made five colonoscopies. I have never thought that the cleaning process is so terrible, but many people do not want to drink a solution to cause diarrhea for a few hours to rinse the colon. So many people avoid colonoscopy for this reason only. ”

Your older parents or friends may have told you horror stories, but Dr. Rivadeneira promises that the preparation process has been “significantly improved” over the past ten to 15 years.

“Previously, it was four liters, a gallon of this terrible taste solution. That’s no longer the case. There is smaller volume preparation that work very well. There are preparations for pills that people can get. There are a number of preparations that are a little better than once, but they all have the same effect. ”

Error number 3: Eating fatty foods

In addition to drinking a drink to make you go, go, go, it is also important to follow the diet plan determined by your doctor – because if you do not, it can have real consequences.

“We usually want people to eat a kind of easy diet for a few days before the procedure,” said Dr. Rivadeneira.

Of course, you should also drink a laxative solution that is intended to clean everything – but it doesn’t work so well if you are fed up with heavy foods.

“If you have a few days steak and potatoes … Those things just climb the colon and simply require more preparation,” the doctor explained.

“We want to grab these things early, so if it’s dressed in excrement and it’s not clean enough to see the inner lining of the colon, then we stop the procedure.”

A filthy look can also be dangerous: “If it’s filthy, you can’t see it properly, then turn right when you are supposed to turn left, and that’s when you sometimes have a drill.”

Error No. 4: Not climbing clear liquids for one to two days

Rivadeneira also emphasized the importance of drinking clear liquids for only one or two days before the procedure for the same reason: dark or milky ones can obscure the appearance of the field.

“I usually make 24 hours of clear juices, and this can be chicken juice, beef juice, vegetable juice, jelo, gatars, ginger, everything clean,” he said.
