They reached a point without change.
Withholding gratuities can seem criminal in our tip-centric economy. However, one restaurant has been praised after refusing to leave extras on their $200 check because their servers had “forgotten” them while looking at their phones.
According to a Reddit post that went viral, the incident happened while the diner was having a “celebratory dinner” at a “beautiful venue” with only 8-10 other customers in the restaurant.
The meal started normally with the server bringing the diner to their table, giving them water and asking for their drink order.
At the time, their waiters appeared to be going AWOL, prompting the Redditor to get up and see what was wrong.
“It took 15 minutes so I went to try to find our server,” they wrote. “I didn’t see it, but I told the lady we were ready to order if she could find our server.”
Unfortunately, that was it baksheesh of the iceberg.
When another 10 minutes passed without the servers appearing, the diner returned to the front desk, where — to their horror — they found “the server and the hostess both scrolling through their phones in silence.”
The restaurant decided to politely deal with the absent wait staff, which fortunately succeeded.
“I said ‘Sorry, we’re ready to order when you’re ready,'” the Reddit user recalled. “They both jumped out of their skins and took out their phones. The server came and took our order and the night went on as normal after that.”
However, the Reddit poster refused to leave a reward on the $200 bill.
“Given that we waited 25 minutes to order our food (we also didn’t get our drinks until we ordered our food), and I know what the server was actually doing in the meantime, I decided not to tip,” said the Redditor. .
Reddit commenters were similarly horrified at the pair’s neglect of dinner duty.
“I don’t see anything wrong with not tipping in this situation,” said one commissioner.
“As a former server, if they got busted and had a legitimate reason to be so far behind that they couldn’t get to you, that’s one thing,” wrote another. “If they’re just fiddling with their phones to the point where they forget to do their job, you’re totally justified. Tipping should be to show appreciation for service. You did not receive good service.”
“This is when you get up and leave, not order food,” said a third.
Others asked the Redditor to inform the brass of their negligence.
“As a former chef, please call and tell management,” suggested an industry insider. “We hated people like this and we want them fired.”
