Ozempic-like drugs can cause skin pain, weight loss doctor says

Burning to be thin?

Dr. Daniel Rosen, a NYC-based surgeon and weight loss doctor, took to TikTok to share the unusual complication he’s observed in patients using GLP-1 drugs.

“Something I’ve seen with my patients recently, quite a few, but a legitimate number of my patients, is allodynia,” Rosen (@drdanielrosen) told his 70,000 followers.

Rosen explained that allodynia is a type of nerve pain that occurs when things happen that shouldn’t cause discomfort. Examples include pain or irritation from washing hair or putting on a shirt.

There are three types of allodynia:

  • Engineering: pain comes from the contact of objects with the skin
  • Static: The pain comes from light touch or pressure on your skin
  • Thermal: pain comes from a slight change in temperature, such as moving from inside to outside.

“Allodynia is a skin sensation that is inconsistent with the stimuli that are applied; the idea that you’d get a burning or sore sensation on your skin just from the wind blowing on it or just your clothes brushing against it.”

Rosen said his patients have reported this pain in their shoulders, thighs and back. He noted that the side effect is listed in the literature for some GLP-1 drugs, but not for Zepbound (tripeptide).

“I think that GLP-1 medications, in general, somehow sensitize the cutaneous nerves or the cutaneous nerves and give people this reaction where they’re hypersensitive to skin stimuli and cause the sensation in your brain of pain or burning or tingling or itching.”

Rosen claimed that symptoms can be alleviated by lowering the dose and then gradually increasing it.

“I don’t think it’s something that’s too much of a concern unless it becomes so concerning that it’s worth going off the medication and sacrificing the positive benefits.”

And this long list of positive benefits extends beyond weight loss. GLP-1 researchers have tested the drug’s superpowers in chronic diseases, such as colorectal cancer, osteoarthritis, drug and alcohol addiction, brain disorders, and more.

On the other hand, and in addition to nerve pain, users of the same medications have reported side effects such as erectile dysfunction, personality changes, unpleasant gastrointestinal problems, an increase in reckless behavior and the frightening and addictive reality of Ozempic buttocks and breasts. .

Still, for some, it may be worth the trade of breathing for burning.

On December 20, the FDA announced that the agency had approved Zepbound to treat moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in obese adults.
